Yesterday afternoon I spent three hours on three paragraphs. Well, at least I like how they turned out. And I keep telling myself that If it’s in the way, it’s part of the way. Still, that was a lot of work for just a little.
Bruce Colville, author of a bazillion books — including one of my all-time favorites, Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher — reminded me that when Oscar Wilde was discovered languishing on his daybed (as only Oscar could languish) and was asked what was wrong, he replied, “I’m exhausted. I spent the entire morning putting in a comma, and the entire afternoon taking it back out.”
As with many things in life, progress on a novel is relative.
