A question of motive

Clearly this alligator we came upon while hiking in South Carolina can read. The question is not about literacy. It's about motive. Did the gator put up the sign in order to be left in peace while soaking up the sun? Or to lure in risk takers who always do the opposite of what they're cautioned not to do, and so end up as lunch?
