The day that commemorates

5/5/11 (Cinco de Mayo) -- The day that commemorates the defeat of the French by outnumbered Mexican forces in 1862. What I didn't realized until today -- that, of course, I should have known if I had paid better attention in history class -- was that the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla helped keep Napoleon from his goal of aiding the Confederacy in the American Civil War. Wow, talk about a "what if." Don't you love learning something new? My plan is to keep it up for the rest of my life.

Currently I'm in Naples, FL on the last leg of a CT-NY-PA-FL school visit trek. It's been a fun one, overflowing with wonderful kids and educators. Plus I got to run 15 miles in Manhattan, dodging people the way I usually dodge rocks and roots on a trail run back home in Oregon. The miles flew by. Love that city. But tomorrow I'm homeward bound, where the biggest part of my heart resides. Can't wait to see Debbie again, and my lovely girls, Kelsey and Amy. I am a lucky guy.
