As a writer, I think of words as my medium. I take each and every one seriously—these bits of language that I laboriously craft into stories.
Sometimes, though, in the midst of that labor I get discouraged. Furrow my brow. Gripe about how hard all of this revising is. Complain that it feels like I'll NEVER type "The End."
That's when I know it's time to step back and remind myself: "Writing is a privilege. Yes, a privilege. A creative process to be grateful for. I don't have to do this; I get to. So relax and revel. Play! Focus on the journey, and the words, and eventually I'll get where I'm going." Amazingly, even after all of these years, it works.
